They say there are no fresh ideas left in horror — but Marshmallow (2025) absolutely begs to differ.

At first glance, it looks like another run-of-the-mill “kids at camp, scary legend” setup. But trust me — it’s anything but. What starts as a simple campfire story about a homicidal doctor who mutilated victims on the same grounds years ago quickly twists into something darker, deeper, and far more unpredictable. That’s all I’ll say — because honestly, that’s all you need. The less you know going in, the better.

From the jump, Marshmallow doesn’t seem like anything special. But give it time. It earns your trust — and then shatters your expectations.

What Worked?

Everything.

I loved this movie. It’s original, smart, and perfectly paced. The acting is solid across the board, and the writing? Shockingly sharp. I live for horror films that pull the rug out from under me — and Marshmallow does that without ever feeling forced. It’s clever in the way it builds tension, and it’s unafraid to get weird — in the best way.

What Didn’t?

Honestly? My only complaint is that it ended.

I didn’t want it to be over. This is one of those rare horror films that needs a sequel — not for cash, but because there’s clearly more story to explore. And if the filmmakers are listening: I’ll be first in line.

Final Thoughts

Independent horror is the heartbeat of this genre, and Marshmallow proves it. It’s proof that original ideas aren’t dead — you just have to look off the beaten path to find them.

So the next time someone says horror is dried up, send them straight to Marshmallow. This was easily one of my favorite watches of 2025. I cannot wait to see what comes next.
