Janet Leigh Once Blocked Jamie Lee Curtis From Auditioning for The Exorcist

By Chaz Walker

Janet Leigh will forever be remembered as one of the most iconic figures in horror history thanks to her unforgettable performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960). Decades later, her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis carved out her own legendary path in the genre, becoming one of horror’s most recognizable and enduring scream queens.

From Halloween to The Fog, Prom Night, Terror Train, Road Games, and beyond, Jamie Lee Curtis built a career that firmly cemented her place in horror cinema. Her official acting debut came in 1977, followed shortly by her breakout role in John Carpenter’s Halloween in 1978. However, as Curtis recently revealed, her horror journey could have begun much earlier—if not for a decisive moment involving her mother.

A Missed Audition That Changed Horror History

During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Curtis shared a fascinating piece of Hollywood history: she was once considered for the role of Regan in The Exorcist (1973). According to Curtis, a producer connected to the film reached out directly to Janet Leigh to ask whether her daughter could audition for the part.

At the time, Curtis was around 12 years old. The producer believed she had the personality and presence to potentially fit the role. Janet Leigh’s response, however, was a firm no.

Leigh felt strongly that her daughter deserved a protected childhood—something many child actors never experienced. Curtis reflected on this decision with gratitude, acknowledging that her mother’s choice likely spared her from the intense psychological and emotional demands of such a dark and demanding production.

The Legacy of The Exorcist

Directed by William Friedkin and adapted by William Peter Blatty from his own novel, The Exorcist remains one of the most influential and profitable horror films ever made. Loosely inspired by reported real-life events, the film shocked audiences worldwide and redefined what horror cinema could be.

The story follows a young girl named Regan, portrayed by Linda Blair, whose disturbing behavior leads her mother to seek help beyond medicine—ultimately turning to the Catholic Church and an exorcism performed by two priests. Released on a modest budget of around $12 million, the film went on to earn over $441 million globally, securing its place as a cornerstone of horror history.

Blair, who was only two months younger than Curtis, turned 14 during the film’s production, enduring a role that would define her career.

Gratitude Over Regret

While it’s intriguing to imagine an alternate reality where Jamie Lee Curtis starred in The Exorcist, Curtis herself has made it clear that she harbors no regrets. Her career unfolded exactly as it needed to, allowing her to grow into horror stardom on her own terms.

And in the end, Janet Leigh’s protective instincts helped shape not just her daughter’s life, but the trajectory of horror cinema itself.

Would horror history be different if Curtis had played Regan? It’s a question fans will continue to debate—but one thing is certain: the genre benefited enormously from how things ultimately turned out.
