Vampires of the Velvet Lounge Earns R Rating Ahead of Release
By Chaz Walker
The upcoming horror-comedy Vampires of the Velvet Lounge has officially received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association, signaling that audiences can expect a blood-soaked, adult-leaning ride when the film is released. The rating was issued for strong bloody violence, gore, language, and brief nudity, firmly placing the film in the same unapologetic genre space as cult favorites that blend humor with hard-edged horror.
A Return to Horror Comedy for Adam Sherman
Director Adam Sherman continues his genre-hopping career with Vampires of the Velvet Lounge, returning once again to horror comedy after a diverse slate that includes Dead Doll, Crazy Eyes, She’s Just a Shadow, and This Game’s Called Murder. While a release date has not yet been announced by distributor Strand Releasing, the R rating marks a significant milestone as the project moves closer to audiences.
Inspired by films such as Shaun of the Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn, the story centers on a coven of vampires attempting to navigate modern life while confronting their own mortality. Their struggle becomes even more complicated when they find themselves locked in a violent confrontation with a dangerous enemy.
Cast and Creative Team
The film boasts an ensemble cast led by Mena Suvari (American Beauty) and Dichen Lachman (Severance). Joining them are Stephen Dorff (Blade), Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel), Lochlyn Munro (Freddy vs. Jason), India Eisley (I Am the Night), Sarah Dumont (Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), Mark Boone Jr. (Sons of Anarchy), Tom Berenger (Platoon), Timothy V. Murphy (The Fabulous Four), Sherman Augustus (Stranger Things), and Tyrese Gibson from the Fast & Furious franchise.
Production duties are handled by Sherman alongside Marcus Englefield and George Lee of Storyoscopic Films, with Noémi Santo serving as co-producer under Adam Sherman Film.
Creative Vision Behind the Film
When the project was first announced, Sherman described the film as a modern horror tale inspired by the exploitation and grindhouse films of the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing thematic influence from the legend of Countess Elizabeth Bathory, the story explores obsession with immortality, blood, and power through a surreal and darkly comic lens.
Producers Englefield and Lee have described the movie as a stylish and energetic thriller that balances humor, action, and genre spectacle, emphasizing both entertainment value and international appeal.
Looking Ahead
With its R rating secured and a cast stacked with genre veterans, Vampires of the Velvet Lounge is shaping up to be a notable addition to contemporary horror comedy. Fans of vampire films and irreverent genre blends will likely want to keep this one on their radar as more release details emerge.
