Return of the Living Dead Reboot Footage Screened, Early Reactions Praise Gore and Tone
By Chaz Walker
Nearly four decades after The Return of the Living Dead redefined zombie horror with punk attitude, dark comedy, and unforgettable imagery, the franchise is clawing its way back from the grave. Originally unleashed by writer-director Dan O’Bannon, the 1985 classic spawned a mixed bag of sequels ranging from goofy (Part II) to romantic (Part III), followed by two largely overlooked later entries. After more than twenty years of dormancy, the undead series is suddenly very much alive again.
What makes this resurrection especially chaotic is that there are multiple competing Return of the Living Dead projects in development, complete with legal disputes between parties. While one project, Trash’s Revenge, has generated its own updates under the “Return of the Living Dead Universe” banner, attention has now swung back to the long-anticipated reboot spearheaded by director Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats), who also serves as CEO of Living Dead Media. After a long period of silence, the reboot has taken a major step forward: footage from the film has officially been screened.
Story, Timeline, and Premise
According to details released by Living Dead Media, the new Return of the Living Dead stays firmly rooted in the franchise’s R-rated DNA, blending sci-fi horror, pitch-black comedy, and visceral zombie chaos. Rather than wiping the slate clean, the film continues the established continuity of the first five movies, effectively functioning as a sequel rather than a traditional reboot.
The story is set 18 months after the infamous UNEEDA Warehouse incident in Louisville, Kentucky. A fresh Trioxin 2-4-5 leak ignites a zombie outbreak in a small Pennsylvania town—this time during Christmas 1985. As if ravenous undead weren’t enough, the surviving characters and the U.S. Army must battle brutal blizzard conditions while chaos spreads. Adding fuel to the nightmare, the iconic zombie Tarman is back and headed straight for town.
Cast and Characters
The film stars Devon Sawa (Chucky) as Isaac Horton, alongside Casimere “Cash” Jollette (Tiny Pretty Things) as Delilah Horton and Kynlee Heiman (The Best Christmas Pageant Ever) as Sophia Horton. Taking on the mantle of the legendary Tarman is Alexander Ward, a performer known for portraying monsters and villains in projects such as Teen Wolf, Annabelle Comes Home, Westworld, American Horror Story, and Escape the Night.
Practical Effects and Production Details
True to the spirit of the original, the filmmakers are emphasizing practical effects over CGI, promising a gritty and tactile horror experience. The film is set for an exclusive theatrical release through WithAnO Productions.
Special effects legend Tony Gardner, celebrated for his work on the Chucky franchise, returns to the world of Return of the Living Dead after creating the half-corpse zombie in the 1985 original. Gardner has designed a brand-new version of Tarman, already teased in early footage. Storyboards for the project were created by Pete Von Sholly, who previously worked on Return of the Living Dead Part II and III, reinforcing the creative continuity with the earlier films. Devon Sawa has credited Gardner as the reason he joined the project.
Initially planned for a Christmas 2025 release, the film has since been delayed to November 2026.
Early Footage Reactions
The official Return of the Living Dead Instagram account and Dread Central confirmed that thirteen minutes of footage were screened at a private industry event held at the London Hotel in Hollywood, California. The red carpet screening drew a crowd of industry professionals, media members, and talent.
Attendees reportedly saw scenes featuring Sawa, Jollette, Heiman, and Ward’s Tarman. According to insiders, the footage was extremely gory and visually impressive, with praise aimed squarely at Steve Wolsh for understanding what fans want from the franchise. Early reactions suggest the film embraces its legacy without playing it safe.
