Marvel Rumor: Blade Reboot Scrapped, Reworked as Midnight Sons Film

By Chaz Walker

When Marvel Studios stunned audiences at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019 by announcing a Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali, expectations were sky-high. Six years later, however, fans are still waiting to see the Daywalker return to the big screen. Aside from a brief voice cameo by Ali at the end of Eternals (2021), the long-anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Blade has remained stuck in limbo.

Despite repeated reassurances from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige that Ali is still attached to the role, the project has faced constant setbacks. Writers and directors have cycled through the production, scripts have been reworked multiple times, and casting decisions have quietly fallen apart. Now, a new rumor suggests Marvel may have finally found a solution by abandoning the idea of a standalone Blade movie altogether.

A Reboot Trapped in Development Hell

Reports over the past year indicated that Ali was growing increasingly frustrated with the drawn-out development process. Actors Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre were once attached to the film but have since exited, with their characters reportedly removed during script revisions. Lindo has even discussed elements of his planned role, offering a rare glimpse into what might have been.

At various stages, Blade was rumored to be set in different time periods, including the early 20th century. One such version reportedly influenced costume design later repurposed for Sinners, a film set in the 1930s. Over the years, an impressive list of writers has taken a crack at the screenplay, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, Beau DeMayo, Michael Green, and Eric Pearson. According to Feige, multiple versions of the film were developed, including at least two period pieces, before Marvel ultimately decided to refocus the story in the modern day.

Even with that decision, the project has continued to stall.

Enter the Midnight Sons

For some time now, rumors have circulated that Marvel Studios is eager to launch a Midnight Sons project a supernatural team-up featuring darker corners of the MCU. Characters often associated with the team include Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing, Elsa Bloodstone, and Blade himself.

In the comics, the Midnight Sons concept has evolved through many iterations, often centered around a supernatural threat requiring multiple heroes to unite. One of the most notable storylines, Rise of the Midnight Sons, brought together an eclectic roster to battle Lilith, the Mother of All Demons, and her offspring. Given Blade’s deep roots in Marvel’s horror mythology, folding him into this kind of ensemble may offer Marvel a cleaner path forward.

Mia Goth, who was cast in the Blade reboot and is still believed to be attached, was long rumored to be playing Lilith. If true, her role could easily carry over into a Midnight Sons film alongside Ali’s Blade.

The Rumor Gains Traction

The latest rumor comes from industry insider Jeff Sneider, who claimed on The Hot Mic podcast that the standalone Blade movie has effectively been shelved. According to Sneider, Marvel now plans to introduce Blade through a Midnight Sons film instead. The logic is simple: rather than continuing to struggle with a solo origin story, Marvel can integrate Blade into an ensemble where his presence feels more organic.

While Sneider cited concerns about Ali’s age he turns 52 soon many fans have pushed back on that reasoning. Still, it’s worth noting that Wesley Snipes was in his mid-30s when he first portrayed Blade. Whether age truly factors into Marvel’s decision-making or not, the studio may see Midnight Sons as a way to finally move the character forward.

What Comes Next?

For now, Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed any changes to Blade’s status. As with all rumors, this should be taken cautiously until more concrete information emerges. That said, introducing Blade through a supernatural team-up could be an effective way to reenergize the character and finally deliver on a promise made years ago.

Would you rather see Blade stand alone in his own film, or make his MCU debut alongside the Midnight Sons? Either way, fans are hoping the wait won’t last much longer.
