Send Help Is Sam Raimi’s First R Rated Film Since The Gift in 2000

By Chaz Walker

Sam Raimi is officially back in hard R territory.

The upcoming survival horror thriller Send Help has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association, marking the first time Raimi has released an R rated film since The Gift in 2000. Yes, even Drag Me to Hell landed with a PG-13 rating, making this a notable milestone in the director’s career.

With Send Help currently scheduled for a January 30, 2026 theatrical release, the rating announcement signals that the film is firmly on track and leaning into darker material.

Cast and Production Update

The project was first reported in October, when Rachel McAdams entered talks to reunite with Raimi after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She was soon joined by Dylan O’Brien, Chris Pang, and Dennis Haysbert.

Filming began in early February, keeping the production on schedule for its early 2026 debut. For McAdams, the project also represents a return to the thriller genre, coming roughly twenty years after her collaboration with Wes Craven on Red Eye.

A Long Road to Send Help

The origins of Send Help stretch back years. In the mid 2000s, Sam Raimi was rumored to be producing a fantasy project written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the writers behind Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th (2009). That project never materialized.

Years later, Raimi flirted with directing a Bermuda Triangle film that also involved Shannon and Swift, but that effort stalled as well, eventually passing to other filmmakers. In 2019, Raimi officially signed on to direct an untitled island based horror thriller from a script by the same writing duo.

The pandemic delayed progress, and Raimi shifted focus to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He has since returned to the island thriller concept, now retitled Send Help, with a rewritten script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

Beck and Woods previously worked with Raimi on 65 and the anthology series 50 States of Fright. They also wrote and executive produced the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman for 20th Century Studios.

Raimi is producing the film alongside Zainab Azizi under Raimi Productions.

Survival Horror With a Twist

From the beginning, Send Help has been described as Misery meets Cast Away. That description still holds.

The film centers on two colleagues who survive a plane crash and become stranded on a deserted island. As the only survivors, they are forced to confront personal grievances while attempting to stay alive. What begins as cooperation slowly evolves into a psychological battle of wills, where survival depends as much on manipulation and intellect as it does on physical endurance.

Film scooper Daniel Richtman later revealed additional story details, describing the movie as a comedy adventure horror centered on a capable female employee and her misogynistic boss. After the crash, her survival skills make her his only hope.

Character notes describe Linda as the smartest person in the room who is consistently underestimated, while Bradley is defined as her deeply unpleasant boss. Rachel McAdams ultimately landed the Linda role.

The R Rating Breakdown

The MPA has rated Send Help R for strong and bloody violence and language.

Raimi himself has described the film as “really outrageous,” which should come as welcome news to fans of his earlier horror work. Outrageous energy paired with an R rating feels like a natural fit for the filmmaker’s signature style.

As Send Help moves closer to release, it is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing horror thrillers on the 2026 calendar.
