Paranormal Activity 8 Sets 2027 Release Date as the Franchise Prepares a Comeback
By Chaz Walker
Paramount’s long-running found footage horror franchise Paranormal Activity is officially returning, though fans will need a bit of patience. According to newly released reports, the next entry in the series is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 21, 2027. For now, the project is being referred to simply as Paranormal Activity 8.
The new installment will be directed by Ian Tuason, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed horror feature Undertone. His involvement signals a creative shift for the franchise while still staying rooted in the atmosphere-driven terror that made the series a phenomenon.
Ian Tuason and the Road to Paranormal Activity 8
Tuason first gained attention through live action virtual reality horror shorts that amassed millions of views online and earned a showcase at SXSW. His feature debut, Undertone, premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2025, where it won the Audience Award and sparked a competitive bidding war among distributors.
A24 ultimately secured the film with a deal reportedly valued in the mid seven figures, marking Tuason as a rising voice in modern horror.
What Is Undertone About?
Undertone follows the host of a podcast dedicated to all things creepy who moves into her dying mother’s home to serve as her caregiver. When the podcast receives ten audio recordings from a young pregnant couple experiencing unexplained paranormal sounds, the host realizes the woman’s story mirrors her own life.
Each new recording pushes her closer to psychological collapse, pulling her toward an inescapable fate. Nina Kiri stars as Evy, the film’s sole on camera speaking role. Sound design plays a critical role in the experience, leading Tuason to describe the film as “found audio” rather than traditional found footage. Undertone is set to screen at Sundance next month.
Blumhouse and Atomic Monster Unite
The next Paranormal Activity film is being co-financed and co-produced by Paramount alongside Blumhouse Productions and James Wan’s Atomic Monster, following the recent merger of the two companies. The collaboration brings Wan directly into the Paranormal Activity universe.
Original franchise creator Oren Peli is also returning as a producer through his company Solana Films. The film will receive a full theatrical release through Paramount and is described as a major priority for everyone involved.
Steven Schneider will executive produce through Room 101, Inc., with Michael Clear and Judson Scott doing the same for Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Executive Alayna Glasthal is overseeing the project on behalf of the company.
James Wan and Jason Blum on Reviving the Franchise
James Wan shared his enthusiasm for joining the franchise, stating that he has long admired Paranormal Activity for its slow burn approach and its ability to make unseen threats terrifying. He noted that expanding the series’ legacy and helping guide its next evolution is an exciting opportunity.
Jason Blum echoed that sentiment, explaining that the collaboration with Atomic Monster was designed to create moments exactly like this. He emphasized that while the new film will benefit from a larger budget than the original $15,000 production, the core philosophy remains unchanged. Audiences are still advised not to see it alone.
Looking Ahead to 2027
With a new director, a powerful production team, and a release date locked in, Paranormal Activity 8 is shaping up to be a significant return for one of modern horror’s most influential franchises. While details remain scarce, the combination of Ian Tuason’s sound driven sensibilities and Blumhouse’s genre expertise makes this one worth the wait.
