Resident Evil Requiem Unveils Live-Action Trailer Starring Maika Monroe

By Chaz Walker

Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise is back this month with the release of Resident Evil Requiem, arriving on February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. To build anticipation ahead of launch, a striking live-action trailer and short film has been released, starring genre favorite Maika Monroe.

The trailer blends cinematic storytelling with classic Resident Evil atmosphere, offering fans a grounded, emotional look at the world of the upcoming game.

A New Chapter in the Resident Evil Saga

According to Entertainment Weekly, Resident Evil Requiem follows Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst investigating a disturbing string of deaths. Her search leads her to an abandoned Midwestern hotel where her mother was murdered eight years earlier.

As the case escalates and a police officer goes missing, Leon S. Kennedy, longtime fan-favorite character and veteran agent, is dispatched to assist. The setup promises a blend of personal trauma, procedural investigation, and familiar Resident Evil horror.

Inside the Live-Action Trailer

The trailer was filmed in Mexico City and directed by Rich Lee, whose background includes high-profile music videos for artists like Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, and Eminem. The short film leans heavily into atmosphere, practical chaos, and nostalgic visual cues.

Although Monroe is not a gamer and had not previously played the Resident Evil games, she connected with the project immediately. She described the look-book she received prior to filming as deeply nostalgic, emphasizing a return to the franchise’s 1990s roots and the original vision of Raccoon City. The experience culminated in her transformation into a zombie, something she described as genuinely exciting.

Monroe has also noted that she is familiar with the Resident Evil film adaptations starring Milla Jovovich, giving her some additional context for the franchise’s cinematic history.

“It Had a Lot of Heart”

Beyond the spectacle, Monroe was drawn to the emotional core of the story. She explained that the trailer felt heartfelt and tragic, presenting the game’s narrative in a new and compelling way. That emotional grounding helped separate the project from more traditional promotional material.

The shoot itself was described as controlled chaos, with zombie extras roaming the set, smoke machines filling the air, and police dogs adding to the intensity. Monroe noted that the atmosphere felt appropriately overwhelming, mirroring the world the game inhabits.

A Cinematic Lead-In to Launch

The live-action trailer serves as more than just marketing. It functions as a short narrative companion to Resident Evil Requiem, reinforcing tone, character, and emotional stakes ahead of release.

With Monroe’s grounded performance and Rich Lee’s stylish direction, the trailer offers a strong reminder of why Resident Evil remains one of horror’s most enduring franchises.
