Two New Masked Killers Were Filmed for The Strangers Trilogy, Then Cut
By Chaz Walker
Renny Harlin’s Strangers trilogy was conceived as a massive undertaking, with all three films shot back-to-back. At one point, Lionsgate even considered releasing the entire trilogy within a single year. That plan changed, stretching the releases across multiple years instead.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 arrived in theaters in May 2024, followed by The Strangers: Chapter 2 in September 2025. The final installment, The Strangers: Chapter 3, is now set to close out the trilogy on February 6, 2026. With the finale nearly upon us, producer Courtney Solomon has revealed a surprising detail: the trilogy originally introduced two brand-new masked Strangers, but they were ultimately cut from the films.
A Quick Recap of the Trilogy
Madelaine Petsch leads the trilogy as Maya, joined by Richard Brake, Froy Gutierrez, Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath.
The first chapter followed Maya and her longtime boyfriend as they traveled cross-country to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. After their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, the couple is forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked attackers.
From there, the sequels expand the scope of the story beyond a single home invasion. According to the official synopsis, Chapter 3 pushes the franchise into its darkest territory yet. The final film promises a full-circle reckoning that deepens the mythology of the masked killers, with Maya returning for a final confrontation that brings the trilogy to an unforgiving conclusion.
Shaping the Final Chapters
Harlin has explained that Chapter 1 intentionally echoed the simplicity and randomness of the original The Strangers. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 instead focus on the aftermath of violence and explore the psychology of both victims and perpetrators.
Audience feedback played a role in shaping the later films. After completing principal photography on the entire trilogy in just 52 days, the team returned for additional photography. Eight days were added to Chapter 2, while Chapter 3 received fifteen days of extra shooting to refine its story and tone.
The final chapter has been rated R for strong bloody violence and language.
The Deleted Strangers Revealed
Up to now, the franchise’s masked killers have been limited to Scarecrow (also known as Baghead), Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl. That was not always the plan.
Solomon revealed to Dread Central that two additional Strangers were fully designed, filmed, and integrated into earlier cuts of the trilogy.
“There were actually, in the original version, two new Strangers that were actually shot and fully in the movies. One was called Ghost Skull. The other one was Witch Face. We filmed them. They’re going to be included in the extras.”
A Supercut May Bring Them Back
The deleted footage will not be lost forever. Solomon shared that the material featuring Ghost Skull and Witch Face is expected to appear as bonus content in a planned supercut release. This version would combine all three films into a single extended feature.
The supercut could receive a limited theatrical run before moving to Premium VOD and physical media. Solomon described the amount of unused footage as extensive, noting that the trilogy generated a massive archive of deleted scenes, reshoots, and alternate material.
For fans of the franchise, the supercut may offer the most complete version of Harlin’s original vision, including the Strangers who never made it into the final cuts.
