'What We Do in the Shadows' Movie Sequel Is Finally Happening

After more than a decade of fans begging, Jemaine Clement has confirmed that a sequel to the original 2014 horror-comedy classic What We Do in the Shadows is officially in the works. Clement revealed in an exclusive interview that he and the creative team have started writing the follow-up to the beloved vampire mockumentary that launched a franchise, a hit TV series, and a whole new wave of supernatural comedy.

The News We Have Been Waiting For

For years, the question has lingered: will we ever get a proper sequel to the original What We Do in the Shadows movie? The answer, it turns out, is yes.

"We started writing. For a long time, we were just talking about it. Now, we've started it," Clement told Collider in a new interview. The confirmation marks the first concrete sign of life for the long-discussed follow-up since Taika Waititi acknowledged the werewolf-focused sequel concept We're Wolves back in 2022.

While Clement did not confirm whether Waititi is actively co-writing the sequel with him, the duo has been synonymous with the franchise since they co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in the original film. Given that Waititi has previously expressed enthusiasm for a sequel, hopes are high that the pair will reunite behind the camera.

Remembering the Original

The 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows remains one of the most beloved horror-comedies of the century. Shot on a modest $1.6 million budget in Wellington, New Zealand, the mockumentary follows four vampire flatmates — Viago (Waititi), Vladislav (Clement), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and the ancient Nosferatu-like Petyr (Ben Fransham) — as a documentary crew captures their eternally awkward undead existence.

The film was a critical sensation, holding a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Guardian calling it "the best comedy of the year." It grossed more than four times its budget at the global box office and launched a franchise that includes the New Zealand spinoff series Wellington Paranormal and the massively popular FX series that ran for six seasons. There was even an animated spinoff that Clement recently confirmed he passed on, feeling his work with FX on the show had concluded.

What Could the Sequel Look Like?

The title We're Wolves has been floated for years, suggesting a story centered on the lycanthropic side of the What We Do in the Shadows universe. Rhys Darby's Anton, the werewolf pack leader from the original film, was a fan-favorite character, and a werewolf-themed sequel has been teased by both Clement and Waititi in past interviews.

However, with the writing still in its early stages, no official title, plot details, or casting have been announced. The original film's surviving vampires — Viago, Vladislav, and Deacon — could easily return, but for now, the only thing that is confirmed is that Clement and company are putting pen to paper.

A Legacy That Refuses to Die

Part of what made the original What We Do in the Shadows so special was its complete lack of cynicism. In an era of self-serious vampire mythology, Clement and Waititi made something genuinely funny, weird, and warm. The film treated its bloodsucking idiots with affection, and audiences responded in kind.

The FX series proved the concept had staying power, evolving into its own beloved beast with Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Natasia Demetriou building an entirely new ensemble. But the original film remains the foundation — a scrappy, low-budget indie that punched far above its weight.

Now, more than a decade later, fans finally have reason to believe the original cast might reunite for one more round. If the sequel captures even a fraction of the original's charm, it will be well worth the wait.
