The Coven Returns: AHS13 Is Bringing Back Every Witch You Love
It's been years since Miss Robichaux's Academy shut its doors — but this fall, the witches are back. American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24 on FX and Hulu, and if the "Surprise, bitch" teaser is any indication, Ryan Murphy is going all in on the most beloved chapter of the franchise.
The Supreme Court Is Back in Session
This is the reunion horror fans have been waiting for. AHS13 reunites the entire Coven and Apocalypse gang — Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, and Frances Conroy all return. That's not just a cast list. That's a horror hall of fame.
Set in New York, the season appears to pick up the threads left dangling since Apocalypse, the 2018 crossover that tied Coven to Murder House. The official teaser baited fans with Madison Montgomery's most iconic line — "Surprise, bitch! I bet you thought you'd seen the last of me" — which pretty much confirms Emma Roberts is back and ready to cause chaos.
Beyond the returning favorites, AHS13 introduces a wave of new blood: Madelaine Petsch, Cara Delevingne, John Waters (yes, that John Waters), Mena Suvari, and Avantika round out a cast that mixes prestige TV veterans with a fresh generation of genre-friendly faces. John Waters alone is enough reason to tune in.
What We Know About the New Coven
Details remain shrouded in the usual Murphy mystique, but behind-the-scenes production photos confirm a New York setting for this chapter of the witch saga. The shift from New Orleans to the city feels significant — Miss Robichaux's witches going urban, trading the gothic antebellum South for something colder and more contemporary.
The season number itself has been leaned into hard: the "13" branding is everywhere, and with 13 seasons of AHS now in the books, Murphy seems intent on making this one feel ceremonial. Consider the show's own history with witches: Coven (Season 3) and Apocalypse (Season 8) are consistently ranked among the franchise's best. A third chapter has enormous shoes to fill — and an enormous budget of goodwill to spend.
The SDCC "13 Flavors" Activation
This week at San Diego Comic-Con (July 23-26), FX and Hulu are going all out to build buzz for AHS13. Four ice cream trucks themed to the show are serving 12 flavors inspired by previous seasons — and the 13th flavor is only available at a secret location on Saturday, July 25, for fans who follow the official AHS social accounts for an invitation.
The exterior of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront is being wrapped in teaser art, and the SDCC grounds will feature photo opportunities with iconic AHS characters from across the franchise's history — Rubber Man, Twisty the Clown, and, naturally, witches.
It's the kind of immersive horror marketing that feels earned. AHS has always thrived on spectacle, and a secret ice cream speakeasy for the 13th flavor of a witches-themed season is peak Ryan Murphy showmanship.
Why This Matters for Horror Fans
American Horror Story has had a complicated decade since its peak Coven years. Some seasons landed brilliantly (Hotel, Cult, Roanoke), others got lost (NYC, Delicate). But the announcement of AHS13 as a witches return — with the full Coven cast intact — feels like Murphy course-correcting back to what the show does best: outsized performances, lavish production design, and a gleeful willingness to go places other shows won't.
Coven was the season that made AHS a cultural phenomenon. It turned Jessica Lange's Fiona Goode into one of TV's all-time great horror villains, gave Emma Roberts her breakout moment, and made "the Supreme" a recognizable piece of pop culture shorthand. Bringing that world back, in a new city, with new threats and new witches alongside the old guard — it's exactly the kind of horror event television that earns appointment viewing.
American Horror Story: 13 premieres September 24 at 9 p.m. ET on FX. Episodes stream on Hulu the following day.
