Amazon's New Horror Series 'Stillwater' Is a Town Where No One Ever Leaves
When a small town refuses to let you go — literally — you have the bones of something genuinely unsettling. Prime Video just greenlit Stillwater, an eight-part horror thriller from Greg Berlanti and Carly Wray, and the premise alone is enough to get under your skin.
The Setup: A Town Frozen in Amber
Stillwater follows Daniel West, an ex-convict who receives a cryptic letter promising answers about his past and a sizeable inheritance — all waiting for him in a small town called Stillwater. He arrives expecting answers. Instead he finds a community where no one ages, no one dies, and no one ever leaves.
That's the nightmare at the core of this series: not a monster chasing you, not a killer hiding in the dark, but eternity itself. The horror of a town locked in permanent stasis, where escape is impossible and time has simply stopped obeying the rules.
It's existential dread dialed up to a series order. And we are absolutely here for it.
The Pedigree Behind the Horror
Greg Berlanti knows prestige television. His fingerprints are on You, The Flight Attendant, Arrow, and Superman & Lois — shows with tightly wound narrative tension and characters you can't stop watching even when they're doing things you shouldn't admire. Paired with Carly Wray, whose credits include Watchmen and Westworld, this creative team signals that Stillwater is aiming for the kind of slow-burn, psychologically layered horror that rewards patient viewers.
The series is adapted from the Skybound graphic novel by Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K. Pérez. If you know Skybound, you know this matters. They're the publisher behind The Walking Dead and Invincible, and they have a track record of adapting comics to television in ways that honor the source while expanding the world. Stillwater the comic is a critically acclaimed exploration of immortality, fear, and what a community looks like when consequence is removed. The television version, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and Skybound Entertainment, has the creative firepower to do that justice.
Why This Hits Different
Horror television has had a remarkable decade. We've watched genre storytelling evolve from anthology shock to genuine literary ambition — The Haunting of Hill House, Severance, The Last of Us. Stillwater appears to be positioning itself in that tradition: character-driven, concept-forward horror that wants to haunt you long after the credits roll.
What makes the immortal-town premise so compelling is the inversion of what horror usually threatens. Most horror threatens death. This one threatens the opposite — endless, unchanging life in a place you cannot escape. The eight-episode first season is expected to enter production later in 2026, with a premiere window targeting late 2027 on Prime Video. No cast has been announced yet — which means we're in the delicious early phase where anything is possible.
Skybound's Horror Track Record
Worth noting that this is Skybound's second major television adaptation currently in development or production. Between Invincible (already a smash hit on Prime Video) and now Stillwater, Skybound has emerged as one of the most reliable pipelines from page to screen in genre entertainment. Their horror sensibility — grounded, human-scaled, rooted in character consequence — translates beautifully to serialized television.
If Stillwater the series captures even half of what the graphic novel achieves, horror fans are going to be talking about this one for years.
