Hammer's Dracula Is Back — With 60 Years of Lost Footage Restored

For horror fans who love physical media, October 27th just became the most important date of 2026. Warner Archive has announced a stunning seven-disc 4K/Blu-ray Limited Collector's Edition of Horror of Dracula (1958) — Hammer Film Productions' watershed vampire classic — and it contains something no horror collection has ever had before: footage believed missing for more than six decades, finally restored to the film.

The Release That Changed Horror Forever

When Terence Fisher's Horror of Dracula hit cinemas in 1958, it was unlike anything audiences had seen. Gone was the fog-shrouded, creaky gothic of the Universal era. In its place: vivid Technicolor, genuine sensuality, and Christopher Lee's Dracula — a towering, feral predator whose red-eyed intensity redefined the vampire for generations. Opposite him, Peter Cushing's Abraham Van Helsing was equally revolutionary: sharp, methodical, and deeply human.

The film was a global box office smash, catapulting Hammer Films into the big leagues and turning both Lee and Cushing into international stars. It launched one of horror cinema's most beloved franchises and permanently altered how the genre approached the supernatural.

Now, nearly 70 years later, it gets the definitive treatment.

What's in the Box

This is not your average special edition. Warner Archive's Limited Collector's Edition is a seven-disc behemoth housing five separate versions of the film: the uncensored UK version, the UK theatrical version, the uncensored US version (Horror of Dracula), the US theatrical version, and — for the first time ever — the editor's workprint, described as "a unique Hammer artefact" that was assembled during post-production and almost certainly the element that traveled between Hammer and the BBFC during their censorship negotiations. No other Hammer workprints are known to exist.

The crown jewel of the set: footage previously seen only during the film's original Japanese theatrical release, believed lost or inaccessible for over sixty years, is now restored and included. The restoration was carried out by Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration in partnership with Warner Bros., sourced from the best surviving archival materials.

The two UHD discs bring with them brand-new 5.1 audio mixes for both the uncensored and theatrical versions, alongside the original mono soundtrack.

The Extras

Approximately 15 hours of new and archival content accompany the film, including:

  • Six new audio commentaries, featuring film historians, horror scholars, the Hammer House of Podcast creators, and Hellraiser's Doug Bradley narrating a video essay on Terence Fisher's gothic legacy
  • "Proving Them Wrong" — Dame Harriet Walter (Christopher Lee's niece) and Lee biographer Jonathan Rigby discuss the complex man behind the vampire
  • "The Sound of Dracula" — an examination of James Bernard's iconic score by his biographer
  • "Victim of His Imagination" — a Hammer script treatment about Dracula creator Bram Stoker, written in the early 1970s but never filmed, now adapted as a dramatized reading by actor/writer James Swanton
  • Archival interviews with Janina Faye, James Bernard (1994), and Dacre Stoker (Bram's great-grand-nephew)
  • A behind-the-scenes look at the 4K restoration process
  • Film materials: censor cards, clapperboards, titles, trailers, and 8mm cutdowns

The Physical Package

The set arrives in a premium leather-feel slipcase with debossed foil titling, housing a rigid inner box featuring new artwork by illustrator Robert Sammelin. Also included:

  • 200-page hardcover book with new scholarly essays on the film, cast, crew, and cultural impact
  • 60-page reprint of the House of Hammer comic strip from the legendary 1970s magazine
  • Double-sided poster
  • Eight replica cinema lobby cards from the original theatrical release

Subtitles are available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Japanese across all versions of the film.

Why This Matters

Horror of Dracula has been released on home video dozens of times over the decades. But this is something different. The restoration of footage unseen for six-plus decades is a genuine historic event for horror preservation. Combined with the editor's workprint and five distinct versions of the film, fans will finally be able to see how the censors shaped — and in some cases damaged — one of the genre's most important pictures.

For Hammer devotees, this is the set they've been waiting for their entire lives.
