Netflix's 'Balaraw: Blood Island' Turns Filipino Folklore Into Must-Watch Horror
A mother vanishes. Years later, a cryptic clue pulls her daughter to a remote, uncharted island where the real story begins. That's the setup for "Balaraw: Blood Island," the new Netflix horror-mystery series that's been building buzz across the Philippines all year — and it finally lands globally on September 24.
An Island Full of Secrets
Directed by Rae Red — the filmmaker behind acclaimed Filipino horror titles "Eerie" and "Dead Kids" — "Balaraw: Blood Island" follows Sabina Tejeros (Janine Gutierrez), who returns to the site of her mother's disappearance chasing a lead that unravels far more than a missing-persons case. What she finds is a family history steeped in secrets, and an island that seems to be hiding something much older than her own story.
Red co-created the series with Jericho Aguado, and together they're leaning hard into Filipino folklore for the show's mythology — a choice that sets "Balaraw" apart from the usual haunted-house or slasher formula. Early coverage out of the Philippines has already drawn comparisons to "Lost" for its ensemble structure and slow-burn mystery, but with a horror engine and a cultural backbone that's entirely its own.
The cast rounds out with Charlie Dizon as Bulak Bernabe, alongside Agot Isidro and Ronnie Lazaro. Dizon and Gutierrez's characters share a central relationship that's been getting attention in its own right — a same-sex romance woven directly into the island's mystery rather than treated as a subplot. It marks Dizon's first lead role in a queer-led project and continues a thread Gutierrez explored in the 2022 series "Sleep With Me."
Why Horror Fans Outside the Philippines Should Pay Attention
Philippine horror has been quietly producing some of the genre's most distinctive work for years, and "Balaraw" looks like a swing at bringing that sensibility to a global Netflix audience with real scale behind it — eight episodes, a proven horror director, and folklore-driven world-building rather than jump-scare filler. If Rae Red's film work is any indication, expect atmosphere and dread built slowly rather than cheaply.
With Netflix increasingly mining international horror for crossover hits, "Balaraw: Blood Island" is shaping up to be one of the more interesting swings of the fall — a mystery box show with genuine folk-horror teeth.
"Balaraw: Blood Island" premieres September 24 on Netflix.
