Santa's a Vampire Now: Shudder Acquires 'Red Snow'
Forget the sparkly, brooding vampire prince of your teenage daydreams. The bloodsucker heading your way this Christmas is 49 years old, balding, has a beer gut, and is wearing a rented Santa suit to get through your front door. Shudder just acquired Red Snow, a Finnish vampire-Santa horror-comedy that premiered at Fantastic Fest today, and it might be the most deranged holiday movie pitch of the year.
A "Twilight" Fantasy Gone Very Wrong
Red Snow (original title Punaista lunta) follows Johanna, a 16-year-old emo teen who's spent years fantasizing about meeting a glittering, romantic vampire straight out of a young-adult novel. What she gets instead is Martti — a middle-aged, out-of-shape bloodsucker who slips into a Santa costume every Christmas Eve to talk his way into unsuspecting families' homes and devour them whole.
When Johanna crosses paths with Martti, she's convinced her dark fairy tale has finally arrived. It hasn't. Instead, she's dragged into a bloody, chaotic nightmare of family trauma and festive slaughter that writer-director Ilja Rautsi has described as "a splattery Christmas present made by freaks for freaks." By morning, per the film's synopsis, the snow will turn red.
Who's Behind It
This is Rautsi's feature directorial debut, but he's no stranger to acclaimed horror. He co-wrote Hatching, the 2022 body-horror breakout about a girl raising a monstrous bird-creature that hatched from an egg, and Nightborn, the 2024 film starring Rupert Grint that played in the main competition at the Berlinale. Both were directed by Hanna Bergholm, and both built Rautsi a reputation for horror that's as emotionally unsettling as it is visually grotesque — a sensibility that clearly carries over into Red Snow's mix of gore and dysfunction-family comedy.
The cast includes Hannu-Pekka Björkman, Anni Iikkanen, Kari Hietalahti, Krista Kosonen, Tommi Korpela, Eeva Litmanen, Jussi Vatanen, Otava Rossi, and Marja-Liisa Nguyen. The film is a Finland-Estonia-Sweden co-production from Bufo, with Allfilm and Hobab co-producing, made on a reported €2.5 million budget. Charades is handling international sales, with B-Plan Distribution on board for distribution.
Where and When to Watch
Red Snow made its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin today, riding a wave of early buzz out of the festival circuit for being as funny as it is genuinely nasty. It's set for a Finnish theatrical release on November 20, before Shudder brings it to streaming subscribers on December 15 — just in time to replace whatever cozy holiday movie you had queued up.
It's a smart pickup for Shudder, which has built its identity around exactly this kind of genre curveball: horror-comedy that doesn't play it safe, doesn't lean on nostalgia for its own sake, and isn't afraid to be genuinely weird. A vampire Santa premise could easily have stayed a one-note gag, but early reactions out of Fantastic Fest suggest Rautsi is using the concept to dig into something messier — aging, masculinity, and the gap between the fantasy you were promised and the horror you actually get.
Why This One's Worth Watching
Horror has flirted with killer Santas for decades — from slasher classics to endless B-movie riffs — but a vampire Santa who preys specifically on the "chosen one" fantasy of a lonely teenage girl is a genuinely fresh angle. It's part creature feature, part coming-of-age gut-punch, and part pitch-black comedy about what happens when your fairy tale shows up looking nothing like the poster.
With a director already trusted by the team behind two of the last few years' most acclaimed festival horror titles, and a premise strange enough to travel fast once it starts trending, Red Snow looks like exactly the kind of discovery Shudder subscribers live for. Mark your calendars for December 15 — and maybe double-check who's actually under that Santa suit this year.
