Mike Flanagan's "Carrie" Finally Drops — and It's Not the Story You Remember
Stephen King's prom-night nightmare just got a total overhaul. Mike Flanagan's eight-episode reimagining of "Carrie" lands on Prime Video today, October 7, and this isn't a straight remake of the 1976 film or the 2013 update — it's a ground-up expansion of King's original novel, built for a world the book never had to reckon with: social media.
A Different Carrie White
Summer H. Howell leads the series as Carrie White, cast after a search that reportedly saw more than 1,000 actors audition for the role. The plot beats are familiar on paper — a sheltered teenager emerges from a lifetime under her mother's control, starts public high school for the first time following her father's death, and finds herself the target of a bullying campaign just as her telekinetic powers begin to surface. But Flanagan has said the goal with the expanded episode count was to let Carrie's world breathe past the gymnasium walls.
That's the biggest swing this version takes: the humiliation doesn't stay contained to a locker room or a classroom anymore. It spreads. A single cruel moment can be filmed, posted, and shared community-wide before Carrie even gets home, and the series leans into that dynamic as a modern-day pressure cooker layered on top of King's original premise.
The Cast Around Her
Samantha Sloyan plays Margaret White, Carrie's domineering mother, opposite a supporting cast that includes Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah as Tina Blake, Arthur Conti as Billy Nolan, Amber Midthunder as gym teacher Rita Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Henry Grayle.
Flanagan directs several episodes himself and brought in a rotating slate of directors for the rest of the season, including Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, and Kyra Sedgwick — all familiar names from Flanagan's own creative circle, which has built a reputation for turning limited series into slow-burn character studies rather than jump-scare delivery systems.
Eight Episodes, All at Once
Unlike a lot of prestige horror TV that doles out episodes weekly to stretch the conversation, all eight episodes of "Carrie" — titles include "First Period," "Dramatic Arts," "Physical Education," and the season-ending "AP Physics" — are available on Prime Video starting today. That structure gives Flanagan room to build out side characters and subplots that the original novel and both prior films had to compress or cut entirely, while still keeping the binge option on the table for anyone who wants to get straight to prom night.
For longtime King readers, the structural freedom is the real pitch here: a story that's been told in under two hours twice before finally gets the space to follow its ensemble, not just its lead.
