'Fool Night' Is the Body-Horror Anime Nobody's Ready For

A hundred years without sunlight. A world running out of air. And a cure that turns people into plants. "Fool Night," the first-ever team-up between studios SHAFT and SUNRISE, just dropped its main trailer, theme songs, and a new key visual — and the body-horror premise underneath its gorgeous animation is exactly as unsettling as it sounds.

A Dystopia Built on a Body-Horror Cure

"Fool Night" is adapted from Kasumi Yasuda's manga, and its setup reads like a fever dream: a thick layer of cloud has blocked out the sun for a century, oxygen levels are collapsing, and most of the planet's plant life has withered away. Humanity's answer is "transfloration" — a procedure that converts a person, piece by piece, into a plant so they can survive in a dying atmosphere.

Our way into this world is Toshiro Kamiya, who undergoes the transformation himself. Where the story turns genuinely strange is what happens after: Kamiya comes out the other side able to communicate with plants, and he turns that ability into his livelihood. It's a premise that treats body horror less as a jump-scare gimmick and more as the entire foundation of its world-building — your own biology isn't safe, and neither is anyone else's.

This is director Atsushi Yukawa's first time in the chair, and he's using the project to make a statement: a crumbling, oxygen-starved Earth rendered through SHAFT's famously stylized visual language, married to SUNRISE's scale. The combination alone makes this one of the more unusual studio pairings in recent anime memory.

Who's Bringing This World to Life

The voice cast anchoring "Fool Night" includes Koki Uchiyama as Toshiro Kamiya, Minako Kotobuki as Yomiko Horai, Junya Enoki as Akira Yatsuka, Aya Endō as Saeko Kanaeno, and Kiyomitsu Mizuuchi as Jin Hiragishi. The new key visual leans fully into the show's bleak atmosphere — withered growth, grey skies, and character designs that look like they're already halfway transformed.

For horror fans whose entertainment diet leans more toward prestige animation than slashers, "Fool Night" is shaping up to be a genre crossover worth watching: a sci-fi dystopia that uses body horror as its central metaphor rather than its special effect.

When and Where to Watch

"Fool Night" premieres November 26, 2026, streaming exclusively on Netflix worldwide. With the main trailer and theme songs now out, the countdown to premiere night is officially on.
